Stuff You Can Use - Youth Ministry Resources

This resource is a super fun video-driven youth group game that encourages lots of crowd interaction. There are 25 short video clips of athletes (skateboarders, bikers, snowboarders…) attempting some pretty cool jumps, flips, and tricks. To play the game, simply play the clips – they’ll pause at the pinnacle of each trick so your students can guess: do they MAKE IT or BREAK IT?

What you’ll need…

  • YOUR STUDENTS. Divide your audience into teams based on the number of your students (we used 3 teams)
  • A VIDEO PLAYING DEVICE.
  • CROWD HYPERS. Enlist some of your energetic volunteers to keep the game rolling and get students involved.
  • ZERO DOLLARS. This game shouldn’t cost you a dime.

Here’s the basic idea. We used this in one of our large group meeting and divided our students into 3 teams. We brought up a student to represent and ring in the answer for their entire team. The teams helped their team representative by voting either “MAKE IT” or “BREAK IT.” An “O” made with their hands signaled “MAKE IT,” and an “X” signaled “BREAK IT.”

Each team representative has only 10 seconds to lock in their answer before the answer is shown, so it needs to happen quickly!

A Shout out to Joe Woolworth at MarketingJesus.net for helping us out with this game. Check out this guy’s stuff, it is AWESOME!

Some things to keep in mind & watch out for:

  • Once the video pauses, students ONLY HAVE 10 SECONDS to lock in their answers.
  • Get the audience involved! Encourage students to vote and help their team representative.
  • Keep the game moving! Use your crowd hypers to keep it rolling.

STUFF YOU CAN USE: Today’s download features the 25 videos we used for this game – hang onto them and use them in your arsenal of awesome games.

SO HOW ABOUT YOU? Please post your comments, questions, and any videos of your experiences with MAKE IT OR BREAK IT if you decide to try it! And hey, if you have a cool game idea that you think other people would love, tell us about it in the comments and share it with the community!

Worm Races Game Guide $Free

Worm Races Game Guide

Worm Races Game Guide

Created by Kenny and Elle Campbell, and Andy Toukatly of SHINE! Middle School Ministry of The Chapel at CrossPoint in Getzville, NY.

Sometimes the best kinds of youth group games are also the simplest and stupidest kinds of games. This is Andy, our Game Master & Candy Distributor, and this is his guest post.

What you’ll need…

  • 2 teams (we played guys vs. girls)
  • 2 sleeping bags
  • A floor
  • Some students (I guess you could play by yourself but we’re not interested in hearing about it)
  • Screen graphics (provided in today’s download)

Here’s the basic idea. Students put sleeping bags over their heads and crawl across the floor like worms in a relay race. The first players from each team crawl to their partners on the opposite side of the room. When they reach them, they take off the sleeping bag and put it on the next player from their team. That player then worms their way back to the starting line to finish the race.

Here’s what you need to watch out for (because kids cheat!):

  • Make sure the players legs stay inside the sleeping bags as much as possible. If they get their knees out of the sleeping bag, they’ll have an unfair advantage.
  • Have students stay on the floor - if they start throwing themselves around like lunatics, they’re going to hurt someone.
  • Keep the racing area pretty narrow. It’s more exciting when the worms are bumping and crawling over each other.
STUFF YOU CAN USE: Today’s download features some editable screen graphics for Worm Races.

SO HOW ABOUT YOU? As always, please post your comments, questions, and any videos of your experiences with Worm Races if you decide to try it! And hey, if you have a cool game idea that you think other people would love, tell us about it in the comments and share it with the community!

Giant Angry Birds: A How To Guide $Free

Giant Angry Birds: A How To Guide

Giant Angry Birds: A How To Guide

Created by Kenny and Elle Campbell of SHINE! Middle School Ministry of The Chapel at CrossPoint in Getzville, NY.

FILE TYPES: A PDF with a full step-by-step rundown of how we did it.

We were pretty excited to create and play a Giant Angry Birds game. But we couldn’t believe how excited our students were. Seriously. They kind of freaked out. This is how we did it…

Here’s a basic run-through of how the game play works…

  • 2 Teams. We played Guys vs Girls.
  • The defense stacks the boxes and positions the pigs while the offense selects which students will launch the birds from the sling shot.
  • The offense has 4 launches (one for each bird) to bring down as many pigs as possible.
  • The offense scores a point for each pig it knocks off of the defense’s cardboard box structure.
  • After all 4 birds are launched, the teams switch sides.
  • We played 3 rounds and then crowned a winner!

It took some trial and error to get each of the components just right, but after lots of testing and experimentation, we were able to get it working pretty consistently.

And here are the links to the websites where we bought some of our supplies…
Green Exercise Ball
More Exercise Balls
Paper Lanterns for Pigs
Cardboard Boxes
Sizes of boxes we used:
54x8x28
22x22x22
15x15x30
12x12x48

handbook2

Every year, we create a new Volunteer Handbook – a guide to our ministry philosophy, the strategy to make it all happen, and the specific roles and expectations of the volunteers on our team. You may have seen the 2011-2012 Volunteer Handbook, but this year’s version is better than ever, with new and better content, a simpler layout, and everything now editable in Pages and Microsoft Word.

This Handbook is more than just a template, though you could use it that way if you’d like – it’s already filled with the actual materials that we use to train the volunteers in our ministry. Everything we’ve included in the Handbook is designed to be easily transferrable to your ministry – or at least to give you a great starting point as you adjust it to fit your needs.

Here’s a quick run-through of the contents of the brand new Stuff You Can Use Volunteer Handbook, which is divided into 3 sections…

1. THE BASICS:

The foundation of our ministry philosophy, our strategy, and why we do what we do.

Our Staff. A page for introducing your team and welcoming new volunteers.

Our “Big Win”: Defining success for our ministry – what it looks like and how we hope to achieve it.

Owning their Faith. The first part of our “Big Win” is helping students begin to own their faith – we explain what that looks like and how we hope to make it happen.

Joining God on Mission. This is the second part of our “Big Win” – seeing students begin to think missionally and share the Gospel with their words and actions.

DisciplingWe’re not here to babysit – we want to see our students become better followers of Jesus. This page explains what discipleship is (and what it is not), and what it means for our ministry.

Partnering with Parents. Parents are always going to be the primary influencers and disciplers of their own children. We need them, and they need us.

Our Ministry Environments. A brief look at the different types of environments we create for students, why each of them exist, and what each one accomplishes.

2. SPECIFIC TRAINING FOR ALL OF YOUR VOLUNTEER ROLES

SMALL GROUP LEADERS. The “Small Group Leader” section of the Handbook will give your Small Group Leaders a simple, but thorough, look at their roles. We clarify “the win” for Small Group Leaders. We define the qualifications and expectations of a Small Group Leader, and we give 7 “How-To’s” for leading a small group well.

GREETER TEAM, CAFE TEAM, AND BAND. We’ve provided a page dedicated to each of these volunteer roles, with “the win,” qualifications, and expectations clarified for each.

3. A FEW MORE THINGS:

Practice Boundaries. How to maintain healthy boundaries with students and our church guidelines for appropriate conduct with students.

Code of Conduct. Our policies for volunteer conduct – includes work ethic, kindness toward others, and the specific moral expectations to which we will hold them accountable.

Yearly Commitments. A statement to be signed and returned to us, stating that they have read and understood all the stuff in the Volunteer Handbook and are ready to start serving! We’ve included one for Small Group Leaders and one for all other volunteer roles (since the role of a Small Group Leader is very unique and has some different expectations).

We review the year’s Handbook in depth (usually over some Starbucks) with every new volunteer that we add to our team, and we also refer to it in many of our training meetings throughout the year. It’s been a super helpful and valuable resource for us, both in organizing our own vision and priorities, and in communicating them to our volunteers. We have an incredible team of volunteers who understand and buy into our vision and strategy – and this Volunteer Handbook has been an essential tool in helping us develop and train them.
